Filipinos have suffered greatly in the past: in the plight of colonialism, wars, martial law, and the like. A lot of issues presented itself as consequences of these events. The Philippine society, seeming blind to all of this, continue to ignore it and live peacefully in the illusion that the people aren't suffering. But several people will not allow them to turn their backs on these issues. The following filmmakers are just that. Lino Brocka, Mario O'Hara, Lav Diaz, Kidlat Tahimik, and Ishmael Bernal are only some of the filmmakers that contributed greatly in the country's film industry. We have them to thank for not only making Philippine Arts and Theater known internationally, but also capturing the reality our people face today. Their films fight for the injustice and inequality that unfortunately, are still apparent even in the present time. It may be small, but these are already stepping stones that can lead to change. And, that's why we have this as tribute for our gratitude to them all.
